Why purpose and values are the foundation

By Steve · 21 October 2026

It’s not all about your product and expertise. In today’s world, the businesses and teams that thrive aren’t just the ones with the best products, services and expertise. They’re the ones built on a strong culture, with a clear mission, vision, and values that fuel alignment, performance, and long-term success. These are the foundations which drive success.

Imagine two businesses and decide, which one is yours?

Business A

Has a clear mission, a well-defined vision for the future, and a strong set of values that guide decision-making. Every employee knows why they are there, what the business stands for, and what success looks like.

Business B

Operates without a unifying purpose. Employees show up, do their jobs, but lack a sense of connection. Leadership struggles to align efforts, and decision-making feels reactive rather than strategic.

It’s obvious which business will thrive. But why?

The Business Case for a Clear Purpose

According to a Deloitte survey, companies with a strong sense of purpose grow 3x faster than their competitors (Deloitte) and PwC tells us that 73% of employees who work at a purpose-driven company feel engaged and motivated, compared to just 23% in companies without one (PwC).

Here’s the Evidence

Some of the greatest turnarounds in business and sports history have been fueled by a strong culture, clear vision, and aligned values. I like to use sporting examples, maybe because I love sport, but also because there are so many examples!

🏎️ McLaren F1 – From the Back of the Grid to Champions

In 2021, McLaren was struggling at the bottom of Formula 1. Leadership was misaligned, the culture was broken, and results were poor. Then they rebuilt.

What Changed?

✅ Clear Vision: Return McLaren to championship-winning status.

✅ Cultural Reset: Leadership changes, clear roles, and removing toxic influences.

✅ People-First Approach: Investing in the right talent and giving them the tools to succeed.

📈 Result?

2023: Went from last place to podium contenders.

2024: Won the Constructors’ Championship in 2024 and again in 2025, proving that a clear mission and strong culture drive success.
